Week 1 – Light
First week is over and the photos are in. I have to begin with that unfortunately there is only two photos this week, instead of three. But one of the guys has had a really busy with his job.
Anyways… the photos for this week are :
Once this week’s judge has picked the photo, I will update the post.
—UPDATE—
First Place: Photo 2 – Brent
Second Place: Photo 1 – Luis
Third Place: Photo 3 – Jordan
Oh God. Every photo is so …. wow!
Sweetie, ya know I love you so much and would vote for ya for the rest of my life cause ya’re my best “fotografo” ever, but darlin’, the photo number 2 makes me crazy.
Photo 1 is a neat, time exposure and given the subject, the exposure is right on. The tones in the cement are really nice as is the color. My eye, however, gets pulled from the light in the bottom right and the light at the top. And the space in the middle doesn’t seem to serve a purpose. A person in the phone booth, maybe in a Superman outfit, would help this photo. Or a dog or something.
Photo 2 makes beautiful use of color. A caption might help with this one as I’m not sure what’s going on. The composition too is excellent. In this case, the empty space on the left side helps balance the light on the right side. Just a hint of detail in the shadow areas might help me know a bit more about what’s going on.
Photo 3 was late. Oops. Beautiful still life. The detail in the feather is awesome as is the detail in the skin. Like photo 2, good job moving up close to something. Overall, it seems a bit dark. I’ll bet if you look at the curve/histogram, you could move it over to where there is a true white and that would help the image pop a bit more. I’d crop a tad more off the bottom and leave even a bit more black space at the top. While a feather is “light,” I’m not sure how this one fits the topic.
With topics like “light” think outside the box. Light can mean bright, the opposite of dark. All your images are dark with spots of light. But it can also mean the opposite of heavy. You can get some fun ideas from places like http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/light?s=t just by looking up the word. Try to approach the subject in a way that no one else will.
Overall, I guess #2 was my favorite.

did no one get “light as a feather” for photo 3? How is that not thinking “outside the box”?
I got it Nicole, if it makes you feel any better 🙂
I’m assuming that was your hand?
