Shooting Hockey

Today, I shot the Carolina Hurricanes Playoff hockey game against Boston Bruins. Definitely glad that I went. It was awesome, however I’m a little disappointed with myself for not getting better shots. I was shooing for the Independent Weekly, a local magazine for the Triangle.  But I can complain about are my photos. It was a COMPLETELY different style shooting and it didn’t help that I didn’t know all the facts or had a “senior photographer” to help me along the way. I must say that Technician really does help you out sometime. Another thing is I was using my dad’s lens (70-300 f/4-5.6) I’m glad I had it but I would of LOVED! (loved is an understatement) to have had my usually 300 f/2.8 lens that I have at most football games. As I found out when I got here that only the “Big” photographers get to shoot on the floor, everyone else is up top *Sad Panda*, so I was shooting from the first floor. Another thing is that I had to shoot through the stands..CRAZY! I wanted to cut off the heads of the people in front me by the end. But I guess I can’t be upset with dedicated fans. So the pictures below are the ones I took that I liked. Yes there are 2. By the way Liked is an overstatement .

By different style, I do want to say that I mean ways to find the “action” shots. If a photographer is on the ground floor they literally shoot through a hole in the glass. Most of the actions goes into the fact that the players are beating each other up have the time and slamming them into walls. And, the point of the action lies in this little black puck that is ridiculous to try and follow. But now that I’ve done it, I want to do it again so I can get better!
