This post is off by a week. Much to my misfortune, coming back from China, getting sick and getting ready for sports day did not help the matter. But better late than never, here is the theme.
Week 8′s theme was Lines when asked why, the picker said, it was because lines are important. Which I can follow, especially in a geometry stand point. Over looking the fundamental reference to a spot in space, a point, a line is the next big thing. It was outlines, defines, and creates borders. So I guess I can agree with that lines are important.
Well none-the-less…. Lines!

hope you are feeling better!!
Top favorite, Photo 2, then photo 1, then photo 3. Photo 3 has so much more in it that I don’t think its as cleanly about “lines” and while one would think photo one would be a top choice, I prefer photo two because its much more complex, its more about what one can build out of lines, like.. what lines can become ultimately. Bah, my critique writing skills have definitely gone downhill, sorry.
Sam:
Photo 2 is by far the best, because it conveys a really interesting and dynamic shape in the urban landscape that you don’t usually notice.
Photo 1 seems too contrived (I’d place it in 2nd), and Photo 3 doesn’t look contrived *enough*, you know?
Nick:
Hmmm, well, I would say I like #1 the best- It’s abstract enough to be visually intriguing to any viewer and in general it has a nice energetic composition. Two is highly “meh”. It’s some stairs. They’re wonky. But it’s like someone just went out to a park with a camera and a monochrome filter and thought “oh, look, angles!” then proceeded to take the most stagnant shot possible. No motion, no interest, and not enough contrast. Three is a solid image- good use of color and textures, especially on the shirt. I’d rank them 1-3-2.
Sam:
1 *is* pretty, but conceptually it’s not as interesting or original as 2. Anybody can take a picture of some curvy shit that casts a shadow, but the content in photo 2 had to be discovered.
Nick:
Discovered how? It’s conceptually a walkway. Yes someone had to think “oh, this is worth photographing” which is nice, but it’s honestly not actually anything interesting. In terms of raw composition and photographic skill, 1 is far superior, even if 2 is -conceptually- stronger.
